Is Your List of Young Life Volunteers Accurate?

Working with young people is one of our greatest privileges, and it carries with it the serious responsibility of keeping them safe. One of the most important ways we live out that responsibility is by keeping accurate records of every U.S. volunteer serving in the name of Young Life and ensuring that each has completed the required screening.

This fall, we are asking every U.S. area to review their volunteer lists and confirm that all screenings are current. Earlier in the year, we experienced system challenges that made logging in difficult. Our teams have resolved many of those issues and created a clearer process moving forward.

Please take time to follow the steps below by October 31 to ensure your records are up to date.

Update Your Volunteer Roster and Review Screening Status

1) Navigate to the Volunteers tab on your mission unit page in YL Connect.

  • Click “renew” for volunteers who are still serving.
  • Expire volunteers who are no longer serving using these instructions.
  • Add new volunteers by following these steps.

2) Review the Compliance tab. Reach out to those volunteers directly who have outstanding screenings. Check out the new, quick-action Area Screening Report listed on your Mission Unit page in YL Connect for a comprehensive, exportable view of your current volunteers and their screening statuses.

Understanding Course Statuses

  • Complete — Finished and cleared.
  • New — Assigned but not started (often for a new volunteer).
  • Renew — Completed course in the past but now is time to renew.
  • Expired — Past due (either initial or renewal). This may mean a new volunteer never finished or a current volunteer missed renewal. Later this fall, volunteers who do not complete required screenings will be removed from the system.
